Goodbye Kona!October 17th 2005 |

His love for water made "Captain" part of his name. His love for food made him fat, (which in turn made "Lard-butt" part of his name.) His love for people made him loved by all. There is no person he didn't like and if you so much has pet his head, he was a blood-brother to you; and if you had people-food, well you might as well be married to him! After thirteen years of swimming and jumping off cliffs at the lake, eating the trash out of the trash cans, peeing on the just cleaned floor, slobbering all over everything, shedding over everything, passing gas in a room full of people and then leaving, asking to go outside just to get another treat, seeing a pretty female dog but not knowing she was pretty, laying in the middle of the hallway so humans would have to walk around him, and being rubbed in the ears, Kona was put to sleep around 6 PM today.

Going to the lake was a drug for Kona. We all knew he could smell the lake because whenever we would be about a mile or two away, he would start whimpering and acting squeamish and the closer and closer we got, he would sound more and more like an otter being squeezed to death or something. When we would finally reach the lake, we would have to put all of our weight into the leash to hold him back from jumping into the water.

Even if we were just out hiking and would come across a small pool of water, before we even saw it, we would hear a splash and see Kona playing in the water. If we started packing the cars up, Kona wanted to go with us because he knew we were going to go out to have a good time at the lake. Usually as soon as any of us would open a car door Kona would come out of nowhere and be sitting in the car before we could realize what was going on.

Kona learned how to climb up on the lower half of the cliffs and watch as we jumped off. Whenever dad would jump out, Kona would jump in after him and start swimming in circles where he splashed. If dad didn't come up after a few seconds, Kona would start whimpering like he lost something.

More than anything, Kona LOVED the speed-boat. He loved going fast over the water and having the fresh out-door air being forced into his nostrils. It seemed like Kona spent just as much time in the water as he did in the speed-boat.

All-in-all, Kona just wanted to play with you no matter what you were doing.

But often times he wouldn't know what was going on and just end up getting in the way.

We will miss Kona's "snore while being awake breathing," bad breath and slobber. It was so classic of Kona then as he was being put-down to let out one last peaceful snort as his body relaxed. Kona was the best dog the Powers family has ever owned and has been a close part of each one of us kid's lives. You will be missed Kona!

On a lighter note, I have a few more slacklining pictures for you. I know, it seems like that's all we do in the free time that we have, but it's just so much FUN! Even when you fall off.
MAP is a natural though.
The other night, William tried to do the impossible - slackline well over five feet up and across an impossible distance.
After many many attempts, he came to the conclusion that he needed to not make the slackline so long.
Matthews even joined us for the fun that night!
I really love that angle for some reason. Anyways Matthews, I just wanted to tell you that you smell good.
William and I played Racquetball with Kenneth (a guy from my German class,) and his roommate. It was a good workout and I want to do it again tonight, but I have some papers to write for class.
This past Saturday MAP and I went to AN AWESOME Reality party. There were a ton of people there and lots of loud music and dancing!
Reality parties are Christian-organization sponsored parties and are a great outreach to those who think you can only have fun by getting drunk. I have to say, Tyler looked quite... "flamboyant" that night...
... but that didn't stop people from picking him up and doing some crazy crowd-surfing!
I danced like the whole night and was sweating like a beast afterward, but I can't wait until the next Reality party. EVERYONE NEEDS TO COME!!!
This Saturday is supposed to be the CCDW class for real this time. I don't know if I will be allowed to take pictures there or not, but I will try. Well, I have got to go finish a 500 page paper for Russian Folklore class.
