New Years Guatemalan Style

Happy New Years everybody! Can you believe I have been in Guatemala since last year? HAHA! I crack myself up... Anyways, the Guatemalan way to bring in the new year, is to buy a whole lot of fireworks from street vendors and blow them up on new years eve. However, these "fireworks" would all be considered majorly illegal in the states, but are considered "normal" here. I mean, these things are loud; many sound like literal bombs going off. Everyone and their mom celebrates new years with hundreds of "illegal-in-the-U.S." fireworks.

I was outside with Mark just minutes before the new year, and we came to this one house with a huge family hanging out outside. As we were taking pictures of all the fireworks going off, all of a sudden the whole family starts to count down all excited, "cinco, quatro, tres, dos, uno, FELIZ AÑO!" And this MASSIVE explosion of "machine-gun-sounding fire" ripped through the air as my first instinct was to drop to the ground to dodge any bullets, but realized that they had lit-off a massive firecracker that made my hears ring with pain.

Tomorrow I head down to Antigua, Guatemala to begin my spanish-submersion class. I will be there for 2 weeks, and won't have a whole lot of access to the Internet, so updates maybe slow or nonexistent for the next 2 weeks. Once I came back from submersion, I begin teaching at Shalom. It's going to be crazy! :)

Andrea can cook anything! And all the stuff she cooks is amazing. She is the best Latino/Italian cook I have ever seen! (Don't worry Memaw, you are still the best country-cookin' gall.) When Jennie comes down here in June, she has got to get a lot of these recipes. ;)

If you could learn a language that way, that'd be so much easier than having to take courses in Spanish.

I thought immersion was a form of Baptism. I didn't know you could learn a language that way.
