A few days ago I was driving in my truck on Lansdown Dr. thinking to myself, "I sometimes think I am really good at one aspect of a creative work, like creating a cool melody for a song, but I'm not so good at another aspect, like actually singing it, or playing the drums for it." I was thinking, "Man, it would be so awesome to have a website where people could upload pieces of creative work that they are really good at and then other people who are great at other things could add to it and make a stinking awesome piece of work." I had no idea that that website actually existed. It's actually more than a website, it's a whole new way of thinking about "reserving rights" to creative works. It's Creative Commons.
I am so excited about this I am about to pee myself. I had heard of Creative Commons before, but I hadn't realized what it was - it's the fine line between "all rights reserved" and "public domain". One of Creative Commons' websites is ccMixter where people upload their work so that other people can take it an use it in their work and the process keeps going and going until something beautiful is created from random talented strangers around the world who have never met. Wow. I was browsing around and found some sweet vocals I could totally use with a melody I wrote on the piano. I'm so excited. Did I say that already?
