International Fun At The GorgeSeptember 26th 2006 |

William, Toddy, Frith, Jackie, and I went in the Jeeps to The Gorge for some mad mudding today. It was a blast. We did some mad feats in the Jeeps with climbing over rocks and driving through creeks and splashing muddy water all over the place.
After the mudding extravaganza, Toddy and Frith went back to Lex and Jackie, William and I stayed to do some rock climbing.
I didn't climb since I didn't have climbing shoes, nor a harness. Jackie and William climbed but had a hard time since all the holds were slick due to the massive amount of rain we've been getting. After a bit of climbing, it was starting to get dark, so we headed to Miguel's Pizza. I had never been to Miguel's Pizza before, but I had heard of its goodness.
We stroll into Miguel's Pizza and order our Pizza. As we ate it, we noticed a different language being spoken at the table to the left of us. Jackie and I both being Linguistic majors tuned our spying ears in on the conversation to see if we could determine what language they were speaking. After guessing something “like French” I turned to one of the guys and asked him where he was from. They were from Norway. I told him that we didn't know if they were speaking French or what, and he points over to a guy sitting in the corner and said, “He's a Frenchman.” So I tried to get the Frenchman's attention so that Jackie could practice her French with him.
A few minutes later as we were eating our slices of delicious Miguel's pizza, we heard yet more foreign tongues being spoken behind us. Jackie and I tuned our foreign-language-hungry-ears to the table behind us to see which language they were speaking. After a few seconds of listening to foreign mumbling, one of the guys spoke a bit louder and said, “Doch! Ich habe...” GERMAN! I immediately turned around and asked them where they were from. They said, “Switzerland.” I then asked in German, “Do you speak German or French.” They answered German so I asked them about why they were here and stuff (in German of course.) Then I found out that they also spoke French, so Jackie queued in with some French. Then as I was talking to these two Swiss guys in German, this German guy comes in and starts talking to us. It was crazy!
Then as we are having our little German conversation, the German guy points over to his girlfriend and says she doesn't speak German because she is from Spain. So I look over in her direction and ask all excited in Spanish, “Oh, you speak Spanish!?” She says “Si,” and I run over and start up a Spanish conversation with her.
I have to say, it was one of the coolest things to talk with so many people from all over the world in their own language. And just yesterday we were at an International Fair at UK and I met two Germans, a Cuban, and a Venezuelan. How cool is that!?
And here is a picture of Macarena (from Chile)
